The History of Hindu Colony Ganeshotsav Mandal

The tradition of celebrating Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav was started by the freedom fighter and statesman Shri. Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1894. His primary objective was to bring together people from all walks of life, raise public awareness of the social issues and unite the people. He was of opinion that it will help the society to transform.

Inspired by his thought, a group of individuals formed the “Friends Association” in the year 1945 with the view to organize social events, speeches and discussions for the residents of Hindu Colony. Shri Narayan Bandekar, Shri Shridhar Varti, Shri Visubhau Tambe, Professor Gupte, Shri Kajale and Shri Appasaheb Ingle were the leading members of this association.

Ganesh Utsav was celebrated for the first time in Hindu Colony in 1946 under the umbrella of Friends Assosiation, which after some years was thereon independently celebrated under the name of “Hindu Colony Ganeshotsav Mandal”. The Ganesh Utsav conducted in 1946 was the first social event to be held in Hindu Colony. From then on the residents of Hindu Colony have continued to celebrate this festival in true spirit and togetherness.
